What is Fiona Weller up to now?

I hadn't really planned on a 'tree change' in my 30's but sometimes, you just have to take a leap. So I've left the world of Optus behind to become the proud owner of a small vineyard in the Tamar Valley, Tasmania. My husband, Julian retrained as a winemaker and has been working all over the place for the past couple of years but now we're working together to make and sell high quality, cool climate wines. Global financial crisis aside, we're loving the new lifestyle And make sure you let me know if you are planning a visit to Tassie.

A new chapter in the Moores Hill story

We plan to build on the outstanding vision and effort of Rod & Karen Thorpe who have built Moores Hill Estate to be such a delightful property with top notch grapes and award winning wines. Moores Hill has a solid reputation as a quality producer and we're looking forward to taking it to the next level. We're also excited about promoting the Tamar Valley wine region to the rest of the world and educating more people about the delights of Tassie wines.

Our current releases

We can do mixed or straight cases or even single bottles! Freight to your door is only $1 per bottle with 12 or more bottles shipped free. Our current range consists of the following gems;

  • 2007 Riesling - not like granny used to drink, this baby's crisp and zingy the perfect accompaniment to Asian food.
  • 2006 Chardonnay - a delicately oaked beautiful wine that's had some bottle age and is drinking fantastically right now.
  • 2007 Chardonnay - our youngest Chardy, bright and citrusy it is sure to impress.
  • 2008 Pinot Rose - a summer wine for fun sunday lunches with good company.
  • 2007 Pinot Noir - this is where we start to get serious! A fine example of Tassie Pinot, bright red fruit, gamey, earthy with a tight tannin structure.
  • 2007 Premium Pinot Noir - our best yet! Only the best parcels of fruit off the old block go into this stunner. A bigger wine than our standard 07 perfect for duck and lamb dishes.
  • 2007 Cabernet Merlot - one for the bigger red lovers but without the alcohol burn you get from those pesky mainland fruit bombs.

Who was Moore and why does he have a hill?

Our property sits on a gently sloping hill in the idyllic West Tamar that was once farmed by Old Man Moore. Moore knew the land was good from the get go and it's quality was famed throughout the district the locals christening the bit of dirt Moores Hill. Old place names die hard down here in Tassie especially in the lexicon of the locals so Moores Hill it has stayed and we're keeping up the tradition. Today we have almost 5 hectares under vine to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet, Merlot and Riesling with plans for a further 5ha of plantings and some new wines including some bubbly. Our vineyard is on a north facing sloping site which makes for a very pleasant aspect from the cellar door verandah while tasting our wines.

Our region: its cool man

You've probably heard the words 'cool climate' & 'Tasmania together and shivered. The truly cool climate sets Tasmania apart from most other wine regions in Oz but what does that mean for our wines? Tasmania's moderate maritime climate, cooled by prevailing westerlies off the chilly Southern Ocean produces some mild spring and summer temperatures, with warm autumn days and cool nights that allow the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly on the vine. The result is maximum varietal flavour development, great unaugmented tanin and acid structure and reasonable alcohol levels all yielding well balanced and exceptional cool climate wines.

Overly alcoholic wines: we're over them

You know I like a drink... but I've become a bit more choosy in my old age. You know when you open an unassuming bottle of shiraz and it knocks your socks off, burns your tonsils and renders that beautifully prepared meal barely apparent. Isn't it about time you become a Pinot convert? A Tassie Pinot convert. You won't look back. Lighter, more delicate flavours but it won't insult your masculinity.

Become a rascal for Tasmania

More and more wine drinkers are waking up to the fact that Tassie makes good wine- and we think Tassie producers could do more to get the word out but we need your help to push things along. When was the last time you felt really passionate about something? When did you hear about a cause you really connected with? Here's one for you: drive to your nearest independent bottle shop. Go in and count how many Tasmanian bottles of wine you can see. You'll probably only need one hand. Then walk up to the counter and ask loudly where the Tasmanian wines are. The proprietor will shift uncomfortably and mutter something about Tassie wines being very good but.. Announce that all your friends drink nowadays is Tassie wine and that you hope to see an improvement in the future and march out. Congratulations, you've done something to help little Tassie producers get on top.
