Contact us What is Fiona Weller up to now?I hadn't really planned on a 'tree change' in my 30's but sometimes, you just have to take a leap. So I've left the world of Optus behind to become the proud owner of a small vineyard in the Tamar Valley, Tasmania. My husband, Julian retrained as a winemaker and has been working all over the place for the past couple of years but now we're working together to make and sell high quality, cool climate wines. Global financial crisis aside, we're loving the new lifestyle And make sure you let me know if you are planning a visit to Tassie.>> Email Fiona >> Call Fiona on 0421 063 784 Become Fiona's friend on Facebook A new chapter in the Moores Hill storyWe plan to build on the outstanding vision and effort of Rod & Karen Thorpe who have built Moores Hill Estate to be such a delightful property with top notch grapes and award winning wines. >> Buy Our Wine Online - you won't regret it Who was Moore and why does he have a hill? Our property sits on a gently sloping hill in the idyllic West Tamar that was once farmed by Old Man Moore. Moore knew the land was good from the get go and it's quality was famed throughout the district the locals christening the bit of dirt Moores Hill. Old place names die hard down here in Tassie especially in the lexicon of the locals so Moores Hill it has stayed and we're keeping up the tradition. Today we have almost 5 hectares under vine to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet, Merlot and Riesling with plans for a further 5ha of plantings and some new wines including some bubbly. Our vineyard is on a north facing sloping site which makes for a very pleasant aspect from the cellar door verandah while tasting our wines. Our region: its cool manYou've probably heard the words 'cool climate' & 'Tasmania together and shivered. The truly cool climate sets Tasmania apart from most other wine regions in Oz but what does that mean for our wines? Tasmania's moderate maritime climate, cooled by prevailing westerlies off the chilly Southern Ocean produces some mild spring and summer temperatures, with warm autumn days and cool nights that allow the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly on the vine. The result is maximum varietal flavour development, great unaugmented tanin and acid structure and reasonable alcohol levels all yielding well balanced and exceptional cool climate wines.Overly alcoholic wines: we're over themYou know I like a drink... but I've become a bit more choosy in my old age. You know when you open an unassuming bottle of shiraz and it knocks your socks off, burns your tonsils and renders that beautifully prepared meal barely apparent. Isn't it about time you become a Pinot convert? A Tassie Pinot convert. You won't look back. Lighter, more delicate flavours but it won't insult your masculinity.Become a rascal for TasmaniaMore and more wine drinkers are waking up to the fact that Tassie makes good wine- and we think Tassie producers could do more to get the word out but we need your help to push things along.
